On Tuesday, Nov. 29, GivingMatters.com, an initiative of The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, is partnering with GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement created in 2012 and sparking a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

GivingMatters.com Manager Nicole Rose is excited to bring this first-ever partnership to fruition.

“In 2021, we noticed nonprofits independently using the Peer-to-Peer Fundraising tool in GivingMatters.com to fundraise for their organizations for GivingTuesday, and we love seeing nonprofits initiating this call to act independently,” Rose said.

“Before my work at The Community Foundation, the [nonprofit] organization I worked for did this very same thing,” she continued. “We took the tools and materials provided by our community’s 24-hour online giving day The Big Payback, tweaked them to meet our needs for GivingTuesday, and held a second online fundraiser on that day in November.”

GivingTuesday is a movement meant to inspire people and organizations to generously give with either their time or resources and serve their communities. It comprises a broad coalition of partners across 80 different countries so that anyone may participate. Visit https://www.givingtuesday.org/about/ to read more.

Rose and CFMT’s GivingMatters team have noticed organizations utilizing skills learned through The Big Payback to create their GivingTuesday campaigns by using the Peer-to-Peer Fundraising tool on GivingMatters.com. One organization used this tool, paired with targeted marketing through social media and e-newsletters, to raise nearly $8,000 through the site.

Rose and the GivingMatters team continually look for ways to fill the organization’s needs, and thus created the partnership with GivingTuesday.

“I hope that more individuals outside of the nonprofit sector take part in creating these peer-to-peer fundraisers for their favorite nonprofits and that they share these fundraisers with their networks,” Rose said. “You can do this easily by visiting GivingMatters.com, searching for your favorite nonprofit, and choosing the Start a Fundraiser button, but the most important piece after creating these fundraisers is that you share them with your networks.

“Be as personal as you can in your story,” she emphasized, “and don’t forget to include the hashtag #GivingMattersOnGivingTuesday in your posts!”

Organizations wishing to participate in the GivingTuesday opportunity must have an up-to-date and complete GivingMatters.com profile and create at least one Peer-to-Peer Fundraiser on their organization’s behalf. Organizations with expiration dates of 08/31/2022 or earlier will need to make all required updates to receive donations for the big day through the site.

To update a profile, log in as a nonprofit on GivingMatters.com and make all required updates.

“On GivingMatters.com, the Peer-to-Peer Fundraising tools work like birthday fundraisers on Facebook most people are familiar with, but you can share your fundraiser’s unique URL on any platform, including email, newsletters, Twitter and Facebook,” Rose said. “One benefit for nonprofits that makes this different from other mechanisms of this kind is that our site provides more details about the donor in real-time, so nonprofits raising funds can further cultivate relationships with potential donors in the future. I also like that anyone can create a Peer-to-Peer Fundraiser on the behalf of their favorite nonprofit, and by doing so you are expanding the networks of those nonprofits by sharing a personal story and your goal for raising those funds.”

According to the digital agency Whale, this year GivingTuesday is expected to raise about $3.2 billion, an 18% increase from 2021’s previously record-breaking $2.7 billion for the day. By partnering with the global movement, Rose hopes that organizations using GivingMatters.com will garner high levels of success as well.

“The vision is this partnership will either further support their [nonprofits] growth in the Social Media Fundraising space by utilizing the tools already provided to them, or allow nonprofits to further engage with their The Big Payback donors by the creation of some sort of organization-led volunteering event,” Rose said. “Through either of these methods, I hope that they can expand their networks and further engage with supporters that are passionate about the important work that they do.”
